My Passion Project: My Journey of Establishing a Library in My Community
By Efe Irele
It was a hot afternoon in my small town in Ondo State, the sun blazing overhead like a watchful eye. I was sitting under a mango tree, a cool drink in hand, when a thought struck me—how many children in my community have never set foot in a library? For me, books were gateways to adventure, knowledge, and endless possibilities. But many kids around here didn’t have that privilege. That moment planted a seed in my mind, and little did I know, it would grow into something much bigger.
The Birth of an Idea
Growing up, I was fortunate to have access to a local library. Every Saturday, I’d spend hours lost in the pages of stories, exploring worlds far beyond my own. But as I looked around my community, I realized that many children were missing out on that experience. I felt a fire ignite within me. I wanted to change that.
I started imagining a library—a space where kids could come, read, learn, and dream. But as the idea took shape, I faced an immediate challenge: where do I even begin? I had no funding, no space, and no clear path forward. But I did have passion, and sometimes, that’s all you need to start.
Gathering Support
The first step was sharing my vision. I called a community meeting, inviting parents, teachers, and anyone who would listen. I remember the nervousness in my stomach as I stood in front of them. Would they believe in my dream?
As I spoke about the importance of reading and the impact a library could have on our children’s futures, I could see some faces lighting up. “You mean our children could have a place to explore?” one mother asked, her eyes sparkling with hope. That moment was pivotal. The community began to rally around the idea.
I created a WhatsApp group to keep everyone updated and involved. You know how we Nigerians love our chats! We exchanged ideas, brainstormed, and even pooled together small amounts of money. Before long, we had a dedicated team of volunteers who were equally passionate about making this dream a reality.
Finding the Right Space
Next came the search for a location. Our town had a few abandoned buildings that would fit the bill, but getting permission to use them was another hurdle. I visited the local government office countless times, armed with a proposal and a hopeful heart. Each visit felt like a test of my determination.
After weeks of persistence, I finally secured an old community center that had seen better days. It was dusty, filled with cobwebs, and in desperate need of renovation, but I could see its potential. The community rallied together to clean up the space. We painted walls, moved furniture, and filled it with books collected from donations.
Fundraising and Challenges
Now, about the money—let’s talk about that. Fundraising became another adventure. I organized events, from bake sales to talent shows. You won’t believe how many times I baked chin chin and puff-puff, trying to get the community excited. Each event was a blend of laughter, hard work, and a shared vision for the library.
However, there were setbacks. Not everyone believed in our project. Some folks told me it wouldn’t work. I remember feeling disheartened at times, questioning whether we could pull it off. But then I’d see the kids in the community, their eagerness to learn, and I knew I had to keep going.
Building a Team
As we moved forward, I realized I couldn’t do it all alone. I needed a team that shared the same vision. I reached out to friends, family, and even some former classmates. We held training sessions, where we learned how to manage a library, engage young readers, and create programs. Every Saturday, we gathered to brainstorm over jollof rice and discuss our progress.
The diversity of our team was a blessing. Some had grown up in the town, understanding its needs deeply, while others brought fresh ideas and experiences from different backgrounds. Together, we became a family, united in our mission to make the library a hub of learning.
The Grand Opening
The day of the grand opening was surreal. I could hardly believe we had made it. The community center transformed into a colorful space filled with books, art, and laughter. We organized storytelling sessions, book readings, and even a mini-concert featuring local talents.
As I stood at the entrance, watching children rush in with glee, my heart swelled with pride. This wasn’t just a library; it was a dream come true. I listened to the sound of pages turning, giggles echoing through the aisles, and I knew we had created something special.
Facing New Challenges
Of course, we encountered new challenges. Keeping the library stocked with books and resources was an ongoing struggle. I learned quickly that maintaining a library isn’t just about opening doors; it’s about sustainability. We started a membership program to encourage community support.
Moreover, we needed to keep the momentum going. I organized regular events and workshops, inviting authors and educators to inspire the children. One time, we hosted a reading competition, and the excitement was palpable. Kids were racing to read as many books as they could!
The Impact on the Community
As time passed, I began to see the impact of our efforts. Children who once had limited access to books were now reading voraciously. Parents began to share stories of how their kids would come home excited about new discoveries. That made all the hard work worthwhile.
The library became a safe haven for many—a place not just for reading but for learning and growing. We even started offering computer classes, helping kids develop digital skills. It was rewarding to watch them gain confidence with technology, preparing them for a future filled with possibilities.
Lessons Learned
Looking back on this journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons. Resilience is crucial. There will always be doubters, but your passion can push you through. Community support is powerful—never underestimate the strength of people coming together for a common goal.
Most importantly, I’ve realized that every little effort counts. Whether it’s a donation of books or time spent volunteering, it all adds up to something greater than yourself.
Closing Thoughts
As I sit here reflecting on our journey, I feel immense gratitude. The library has become more than just a building filled with books; it’s a testament to what a community can achieve when they unite for a common cause.
So, what about you? Do you have a passion project that’s been lingering in your heart? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments! Let’s inspire each other to turn our dreams into reality.
