My Experience Creating a YouTube Cooking Channel

By Nomvula Sithole

Growing up in sunny South Africa, the kitchen was always a hub of laughter, love, and, of course, food. From the moment I could reach the countertop, I was captivated by the magic of cooking. My mom would whip up a mean bunny chow, while my aunt made the best potjiekos I’ve ever tasted. It was no surprise that when I thought about sharing my passion with the world, I turned to YouTube. But let me tell you, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses!

The Idea Sparks

The idea for my cooking channel first flickered to life while I was scrolling through a bunch of food videos one afternoon. I remember thinking, “Why not share my own recipes and stories?” South African cuisine is a treasure trove of flavors, and I wanted to showcase it all. But before I could get too excited, a wave of doubt washed over me. “Who would even want to watch me cook?” I wondered.

I decided to push that negativity aside. After all, my friends and family always enjoyed my food. So, why not share my recipes with a wider audience? With a flicker of determination, I grabbed my phone and began filming.

The First Steps: Equipment and Setup

Now, let’s be real. I didn’t have the fancy camera equipment or editing software that many YouTubers boast about. I started with my smartphone, a couple of inexpensive lights from a local store, and my kitchen – which, I must say, is not always the tidiest! I learned quickly that good lighting makes all the difference. I’d position my phone at odd angles, trying to capture the perfect shot of my dishes.

I also dived into the world of editing apps. Sometimes, I felt like I was juggling a hundred things at once – chopping veggies, mixing spices, and trying to make my video look professional. But that was part of the fun! I remember one evening, after a long day at work, I spent hours trying to edit my first video. I was so exhausted, but when I finally hit “upload” and saw my video live, my heart raced like I had just won the lottery.

The First Video: A Rollercoaster of Emotions

The day I uploaded my first video was surreal. I had chosen a simple recipe for a classic South African braai relish. I was excited and nervous, like a child waiting for their birthday cake. I shared it on social media, anxiously waiting for feedback. Within a few hours, I got my first comment: “Yoh, this looks delicious!” Just like that, my heart soared.

But then came the not-so-great comments. “You should have cut the onions differently,” one person said. I felt a pang of disappointment. But I reminded myself that criticism is part of the game. I decided to take it on the chin and improve. It wasn’t just about cooking; it was about learning and growing.

Building a Community

As the weeks went by, I found myself connecting with people from all over the world. Comments poured in, and I started to see familiar names return with each video. “Aunty Bongi, your bunny chow recipe changed my life!” one viewer wrote. It warmed my heart and fueled my desire to keep going.

I also learned to embrace the power of collaboration. I reached out to local chefs and food enthusiasts to join me in some videos. I felt like a kid in a candy store, discovering new flavors and cooking techniques. Each collaboration brought a fresh perspective, and my channel began to flourish. Plus, it was a great excuse to make new friends!

The Challenges: Learning the Hard Way

Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were days when I’d burn a dish or forget to hit record. I remember one time, I was making a beautiful melktert, and I realized halfway through that I had forgotten to add sugar! You can imagine the look on my face. I laughed it off and decided to share the blooper in my next video. Embracing those mistakes made me relatable, and my audience appreciated my honesty.

I also faced the challenge of consistency. Juggling work, family, and my channel sometimes felt overwhelming. I had to learn to manage my time wisely. I started planning content in advance, setting aside specific days for shooting and editing. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.

Finding My Voice

As my channel grew, I realized the importance of finding my voice. I didn’t want to just be another cooking channel; I wanted to be me. I infused my personality into each video, sharing stories about my childhood, my family traditions, and the cultural significance of the dishes I prepared. I’d often say, “Cooking is about love, not perfection,” a mantra that resonated with many viewers.

I experimented with different formats, like live cooking sessions where I could interact with my audience in real time. The sense of community was palpable, and it made the hard work feel worthwhile. I was no longer just a cook; I was a storyteller.

The Joy of Sharing

Every time I received messages from viewers sharing their cooking experiences or showing off photos of their creations, I felt a rush of joy. One day, a lovely lady from Cape Town sent me a video of her family enjoying a dish I made on my channel. She said it brought them together during tough times. That moment hit me hard. It made me realize that food is more than just sustenance; it’s a way to connect, to heal, and to celebrate life.

Looking Ahead

As I sit here writing this, I can hardly believe how far I’ve come. From a hesitant cook to a YouTube creator with a loyal community, it’s been a wild ride. I’ve learned that passion, perseverance, and authenticity are the keys to success. If you’re thinking about starting your own YouTube channel, go for it! Share your love for cooking, your culture, and your stories. You never know who you might inspire along the way.

So, what do you think? Have you ever thought of sharing your culinary journey? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
